February/March Thread of the Month

Once again I'm tardy, but this time it was mainly due to my computer problems. Here at last is the new Thread of the Month. This collection will run until the end of March, unless it sells out, of course. It is listed in the sidebar, but I have also listed it on my personal website so that it can be added to a shopping cart if you require more than one item. This collection is once again the fine perle and is for cut lengths in five different colours. The price includes postage.

We are in the process of revamping our websites. Soon both Winifred Cottage and Sassa Lynne will have shopping carts so purchases will be able to be made immediately. There are a few items for sale on the above personal website in the meantime - including the first DVD, and as from today you can also pre-order Level 2 which will be out before Easter.

Is anyone coming to Textiles in Focus next week? From Friday until Sunday we will be at Cottenham Community College near Cambridge. If you would like further information just let me know.

You're the first to know! Here is the first picture of my new DVD on the Embellisher Machine (otherwise known as Machine Needle Felting). Hot off the press they arrived a little while ago.

This is the first in a new series and is full of hints and tips to get everyone going. It includes a series of demonstrations of some simple techniques which will set you well on your way to using your machine efficiently including a safe way to change your needles. It will be shortly listed on my website where you will also be able to buy a pack of fibres etc to use with the DVD

Thread of the Month for November/December

The end of the year is fast approaching and so I have decided that this thread collection will be the last for this year. As a special bonus, and by way of saying thankyou to those of you that purchase regularly, this collection will come with a suprise bonus. That will be a secret until you receive it in the post.

This month the colours are another useful collection, in fact as I was preparing them I realised that they will go perfectly with something that I was planning, so if there are any left they certainly won't go to waste. As usual you can purchase them via the link in the sidebar. From this month they will also be available from my personal website where you will also shortly be able to find details of a series of DVD's on the Embellisher.

New threads

I've just listed several new items on Etsy. You may like to take a look, but for a preview you can find them here by scrolling down through the entries for today. However, some of them are new additions to the range, so I thought I'd tell you about them here.

The first one I'll mention is in fact an old favourite! Stranded cotton has been loved by stitchers for years. It is a very versatile thread as it can be separated into separate strands and used for many stitching techniques. Most popularly used for cross stitch it is also loved by crazy quilters and embroiderers too. This is the first of several that will be listed over the next while, and it will become a regular part of the Sassa Lynne at Etsy stock.

this pretty mix of Coral, Pink, Apricot, and palest Green would lend itself to flowers or countryside, but I can see other uses for it too.

This fine soft cotton is a yarn you may not have seen before. It is a smooth yarn, and stitches well. Once again, it will now be a regular listing and over the next week several more will make an appearance.

It may be too thick for stitching through very fine fabrics, but would be lovely couched onto the surface. Stitches like Bokhara Couching are also very effective when a thread like this is used.

I love using Perle yarn. Our fine and medium perle are very popular, and so too is out Perle 3. This is usually only available to personal shoppers, but slowly it too will be added to the Etsy inventory.

.How many of you hate stitching with rayon? This is a comment that I hear all the time when we are at shows, but it is one of the most effective fibres for stitching if you know how to handle it. If you look herethis pic you will find another new thread, this time a stranded rayon.

This picture doesn't do it justice. It has a shine that surpasses all, and, because it is stranded can be used for so many applications. Not going to consider it? Read the description on the listing and you will find out how you can so easily make it your favourite thread!

Another thread that is very popular with personal callers is our Metallic Perle. I can't tell you how easy it is to stitch with this yarn. It is usually only available online with our three thread selections but it will now also be listed as an individual thread.

There will be a few more new things shortly, but the last I'll point you to is this selection of threads. Our mixed thread selections are very popular, but sometimes a shorter length is needed, so these mixes are for approximately 2m of each yarn.

Festival of Quilts etc...

Well, the August thread of the month didn't make it either. You can see that I have been busy by reading here and here. I'm not making excuses, but I have completely run out of time... We are now busily getting ready for the Festival of Quilts. I've done a lot of dyeing specifically for the occasion, including chiffon scarves (you can see some of them here) for our special little packets, lots of threads, carrier rods, silk pods, and, of course, our Embellisher Rolls. There are some special colours, but, of course, it will mostly be the Serendipity range - so once it's gone - it's gone!

If you are visiting the show at the NEC in Birmingham UK please stop at H22 - Winifred Cottage - and say 'Hi'! It's always lovely to meet people face to face. It's not too late to buy your tickets, and there are still some special offers - even for visitors from overseas..... Hope to see you there. Oh, and if you are visiting on Friday - don't be surprised to see a TV crew from the Country Channel doing some filming. You can read more about that here.

I'm not sure where July went. It has been the busiest month this year, and August is busier! You will notice that the July thread of the month didn't appear, well, it's too late now, so the next one will be in August. There are two lots of the June thread left, so I'll leave it up until the next one comes.....

I've also got some new things to show you, but they are waiting for photographs, so they will stay a secret for now. The first few were an experiment, and they have gone so well we have done 'another run' as it were. Hmm, I wonder what they can be.......? If you are coming to the Festival of Quilts you will be able to see them in person.......

June thread of the month, and another new venture....

We have a delightful little grandson. Not yet two years old he is a joy, and we have been able to spend time with him and get to know him. I have dyed several items of clothing for him, mainly tee-shirts and the like, but I have been amazed at the comments and requests from friends of his parents. This has prompted me to list the first of a few items of this nature on Etsy. You can find the first one here, it is very colourful, and ideal for the summer. It would be such a shame to cover it up!

I will add more items in time, but thought you might like to see this one.

And so to the thread of the month. This time I have chosen some rich colours that will go with a number of combinations.

They range from a mix of Navy mixed with Green ...

through to Magenta with Dusky Pink.

This is just a very quick post. We are packing to go away for a few days, and I have to admit that we really need it. We have a little hideaway that we visit once a year, deep in the heart of Wales. Our main companions for the week will be sheep, and it will be bliss - whatever the weather decides to do.

You have already heard about our little shop on Etsy. I have listed a few new items there today, and also listed some at a new venue. I have decided to list also on Artfire. Who knows what will happen? You can find the couple of items here.

Today is a Bank Holiday. It means, of course, that all the Post Offices are closed, so we can't post out the Thread of the Month until tomorrow. In the meantime I thought I'd post a picture of them all packaged up and ready to go. This is only a quick scan, and the clear covering is very reflective so it isn't the best of shots. I have to say, though, that they look lovely in real life.

The last collection was very popular, so I have decided to offer another collection in different colours. Once again these are only available here at this price.

This time I have chosen a selection of seven skeins of the fine perle in colours that range from Rose Pink mixed with Lilac through to Denim with touches of Rose and Iced Lilac. Each skein is of cut lengths, and contains approx 25 metres (over 25 yds). What other colours will you find? Another skein has delicate and subtle shades of Light Rose with Icey Silver, Dove Grey and Rose. In another Dark Blue mingles with Lilac, Silver Rose and Navy. The fifth skein has some surprises, French Navy mixes with Olive, Rosey Lilac and Fern. Skein number six has Dark Coral, Dusky Blue, Rose Pink and even a touch of Gold, and the seventh skein is a joyful mix of Deep Rose, Rosey Lilac, Sun Yellow and Light Aubergine. This is a slightly different selection. Once again it is the Perle Fine, but I have decided that this time I will offer seven small skeins together in a collection. IT IS NOT AVAILABLE ANYWHERE ELSE.

Each skein is approximately 25yds in total, that is just a bit under 25 metres, and would normally sell at £2.00 per skein. This means that the all in price of £10.00 is a very good bargain as it once again includes postage world wide.

None of the skeins are a single colour, all are shaded. It is a very pretty collection and can be put to a number of uses. Please be aware, though, that each skein is of CUT lengths, ideal for stitching, but not suited to crafts requiring a length that is over 1 metre.

March Thread of the Month

This is a very gentle colourway and only available as a Jumbo Perle Fine. Shades of pale coral with old rose, primrose and just a splash of light lime with lightest lavender.

Once again, very limited quantities, so snap them up while they are available. Don't forget that the price includes postage to anywhere in the world and that there are 240m in length. There is plenty for an enormous project, or enough to divide amongst several friends.... stitch by hand, or use it on the sewing machine. If you want to know how to do this just ask when you buy.

New Knitting Yarn

Summer is on its way. One of the best knitting yarns for the heat is 100% cotton, and we have just introduced such a yarn. The first one is listed on Etsy and you can find it here

This is a beautiful soft colourway, and is, of course, machine washable. It is a double-knitting yarn/sports weight.

Textiles in Focus/Unravel

It is rare to find specialist stitching events happening on the same weekend, however this coming weekend is one of the exceptions.

Early tomorrow morning will see us travelling northwards toward Cambridge. We will be heading off to Textiles in Focus, a three day show that has become the high spot of the early year as far as textiles are concerned. When we visited the first event no-one had any idea that it would become such an eagerly awaited event for so many people. There is always a lot to see and much with which to get involved so very good value for money. You can read about past events here. We will be well stocked with hand-dyed goodies, with some new colours around, and also some new items making their first appearance at the show. Our other stock will be there too, and you will find us on the Winifred Cottage stand.

However, visiting Textiles in Focus has meant that we won't be able to attend Unravel. A new Festival of Knitting, Unravel promises to be equally exciting, and I happen to know that people are travelling from as far away as deepest Europe, just to find out what's going on. This too will become an annual event and hopefully the dates won't clash next year. If you are visiting the show do pop along to the InterKnit Cafe. You will find a wonderful selection of yarns, and, making their debut, several yarns from Sassa Lynne. If they aren't immediately obvious please ask to see them as there are some lovley new colours and special yarns there for your delight.

February Thread of the Month

Jumbo Perle Fine

I thought it was time to tell you about the finest thread in our range. Soft and silky, this mercerised cotton yarn is a dream to use and is currently only available in the Jumbo size. It slides through fabric like butter, either by hand or machine.

This is actually a closeup of the yarn and illustrates beautifully the 'pearl' effect that is a character of this yarn. This particular colourway is currently for sale at Etsy. Each hank has approximately 240 metres.

This beautiful yellow combination is also available at Etsy. It is listed here, and as one of our Serendipity range is a 'one off'.

Apart from stitching Perle Fine would also make an interesting 'knitting in' yarn combined with a heavier thread, or use it as it is for lace or crochet. It is roughly equivalent to a Perle 8. I have also discovered that it is a dream to use in the needle of a sewing machine. You will need a Topstitch 100 needle, and if you want instructions when you purchase just ask and I'll enclose a leaflet. It is really simple and there is no laborious hand-winding onto a bobbin.

The good news is that the Thread of the Month is almost ready. The first one will be unveiled tomorrow. In VERY limited quantities it will also only be available until 28th February.

It will be a slow process, as I have dyeing and other things to do, however I have begun to list some more items in the Etsy shop. I certainly hope to have the stock up to 40 by the end of tomorrow, and maybe more by the end of the week. Part of the problem is the weather today. It is very dull and grey making it difficult to take photographs.

As for the Thread of the Month. That will make an appearance here very soon, so keep your eyes open!

Some colours in the Serenditpity range are definitely unrepeatable. They are the result of several dye processes followed by an overdye. The processes bring out the most amazing colours, and they are especially beautiful on the Jumbo Perle. Normally these are only available to customers at our stand, but I have decided to showcase some of the here and make them available for sale in a link in the sidebar. These will be in very restricted numbers and once they have gone there will be no more. Sometimes they will be bright and cheerful, at other times they will be moody and sultry, so it will be worth keeping your eyes open! Before long they could be winging their way to you from the UK.
I may introduce other yarns this way too, so,watch out for the Thread of the Month!

Perle 5

One of the first yarns we introduced was perle 5. Initially it was only in small skeins, but over the years the range has grown. We only use the highest quality mercerised cotton, and this thread is no exception.

This picture shows three of the small skeins from our Serendipity range twisted together. You can see the wonderful sheen that is apparent. Imagine this incorporated into your stitching or knitting. Each of these skeins is 20 metres before dyeing

Jumbo Perle is probably one of our most popular lines. The 'Jumbo' refers to the size of the skein, not the weight of the yarn. Weighing 25g each skein has 120 metres before dyeing, and is available in a wide range of colour combinations. This picture shows the Poppy colourway

We have two colour ranges:

1 The named range which is available from our website and very popular. This often means that they are dyed to order, so a short wait is sometimes inevitable. There are currently 42 colour combinations available.

2 Our Serendipity range. Serendipity means 'the result of a happy accident' and that exactly describes this range! Although similar colours and combinations can be found this is definitely an unrepeatable collection. Grab it while it is there because it won't be repeated. You can find this range on our stand whenever we are out to sell, and also in our Etsy shop.

The other thread that falls into the category of perle 5 is a beautiful Metallic Perle. Once again it is mercerised cotton, but this time there is also a fine metallic thread twisted in with the cotton. These are included in our thread packs and once again you can view the colours in the named range on the website. Serendipity collections are also sometimes available on Etsy.

Here you can see some thread packs ready for sale. Top left is Delphinium and top right is Lemon Tart. The others are Serendipity. You can see the metallic perle nestling between the other threads.

What can you use them for ? Embroidery, knitting, tassels, crochet, mixed media work, crazy patchwork, quilting...... Lots of other uses, what can you come up with....?
